On 22 & 23 January 2026, Dublin City University’s Law and Tech Research Cluster (coordinated by DCN member Dr. Edoardo Celeste), celebrated Ethics & Privacy Week with a two-day event titled “The Gavel and the Algorithm: Courts’ Role in a Data-Driven World”. The event explored the role of courts in a digital environment shaped by data-driven technologies and AI, and examined the broader legal and ethical challenges emerging at the intersection of justice and technology.
The keynote session featured a dialogue with Justice Iseult O’Malley (Supreme Court of Ireland) and Justice Gilmar Ferreira Mendes (Supreme Court of Brazil). Opening remarks were delivered by Flávio Helmold Macieira (Brazilian Ambassador to Ireland).
The event was co-organised by the Law and Tech Research Cluster of the Dublin European Law Institute in partnership with the EMILDAI programme, the ADAPT Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology, the Instituto Brasileiro de Ensino, Desenvolvimento e Pesquisa, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul.
