DESCRIPTION:9th GIG-ARTS Conference | 26-27 May 2025\, Salerno\nThe Rise of Digital Sovereignty: Ambiguities and Challenges\nDeadline for abstract submissions: 31 January 2025 \nThe European Multidisciplinary Conference on Global Internet Governance Actors\, Regulations\, Transactions and Strategies (GIG-ARTS) gathers scholars and practitioners in an annual conference to debate the latest research on governing the global internet. Each conference highlights a main theme while also welcoming contributions on other aspects of global internet governance. \nThe Ninth GIG-ARTS Conference\, to be held at the University of Salerno on 26-27 May 2025\, takes as its main theme “The Rise of Digital Sovereignty: Ambiguities and Challenges.” \nThis conference aims to foster a critical dialogue on the rise of digital sovereignty\, addressing its motivations\, ambiguities\, and contradictions. We invite papers that provide both theoretical insights and empirical analyses\, drawing from a wide range of disciplines\, including political science\, law\, economics\, communication\, science and technology studies. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions that explore the future of digital sovereignty and its role in shaping the global digital order. \nTherefore\, the Ninth GIG-ARTS Conference especially welcomes papers that address the sorts of questions listed below. We aim to compile a selection of contributions in a journal special issue and/or an edited volume. \n\nDefining digital sovereignty: Conceptual frameworks and theories;\nComparative perspectives on digital sovereignty;\nThe economy of digital sovereignty: Protectionism vs. global digital integration;\nThe geopolitics of digital sovereignty;\nDigital sovereignty and digital constitutionalism;\nDigital sovereignty and national security;\nMotivations and implications of data localization\, network territorialization\, and platform regulation;\nDigital sovereignty and digital colonialism\, authoritarianism\, and imperialism;\nThe role of international organizations (WTO\, ITU\, etc.) in digital sovereignty;\nTech standardization and sovereignty: Competing global norms;\nGlobal digital supply chains and strategic autonomy;\nCybersecurity\, weaponization\, and digital sovereignty;\nDigital sovereignty and emerging technologies;\nDigital sovereignty and environmental issues;\nDigital sovereignty and Internet fragmentation.\n\nAs always\, alongside the main theme\, the GIG-ARTS conference also welcomes papers on other aspects of internet governance. SUMMARY:Erasmus+ Blended-Intensive Program: Digital Constitutionalism and Digital Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:2025 BIP | 26-30 May 2025\, Salerno \nWe are excited to announce that the next edition of the Digital Constitutionalism Teaching Partnership’s Erasmus+ Blended-Intensive Program (BIP) is planned for late May 2025 and will be hosted by the University of Salerno. Held alongside the 9th GIG-ARTS Conference\, this year’s BIP focuses on the theme “Digital Constitutionalism and Digital Sovereignty: Navigating Power and Rights in the Digital Age”. \nThe program\, organised by the Digital Constitutionalism Network\, examines the impact of digital sovereignty policies on fundamental rights and citizenship. The BIP will equip students with the skills to critically analyse digital policies. A key benefit of the program is the opportunity to engage with industry experts through participation in international events. \nAdditionally\, through face-to-face lectures and event participation\, the BIP will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the topics covered\, while also helping them develop valuable soft skills\, including public speaking\, teamwork\, and writing policy briefs. \nWhere? The program will take place in person at the University of Salerno’s Department of Management and Innovation Systems – Internet and Communication Policy Center (ICPC) and is coordinated by Mauro Santaniello in collaboration with four other European universities. \n\n\n\nWhen? The program will take place in person from May 26 to 30\, 2025 (5 days)\, with a total duration of 30 hours. SUMMARY:2025 GigaNet Symposium
DESCRIPTION:On June 23\, 2025 DCN members Dr. Dennis Redeker\, Dr. Mariëlle Wijermars and Dr. Nicola Palladino were part of GigaNet’s Annual Symposium during the Internet Governance Forum 2025 in Lillestrøm\, Norway. They presented research results from a joint project on discourse coalitions found across Internet\, platform and AI governance “digital bills of rights” (1992-2023) on the panel “Mapping the Politics of Global Technology Governance: From Domestic Coalitions to Global Norms”. This work is part of REMIT project research located at ZeMKI that focuses on normative construction of technology governance.

SUMMARY:Dr. Dennis Redeker gives lecture on platform regulation at the Haus der Wissenschaft
DESCRIPTION:On 13 July 2024\, Dr. Dennis Redeker\, ZeMKI member and postdoc in the “Platform Governance\, Media\, and Technology Lab” (Prof. Dr. Katzenbach)\, spoke about social media platforms and their regulation as part of the “Wissen um 11 (Knowledge at 11)” lecture series at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Bremen. The public lecture in the Olbers Hall\, entitled “Against hate\, censorship and disinformation – challenges and solutions for the global regulation of social media platforms”\, attracted an audience of around 60 people. In addition to other projects\, the results of the Platform Governance Survey\, which was conducted at ZeMKI\, were presented. Highlights of the subsequent discussion with the audience were the role of national media councils\, the Oversight Board (Meta)\, innovative approaches such as the “Fediverse”\, as well as the need to develop stronger media skills through further education.

SUMMARY:The ICPC Research Team Hosted by the University of Padova for a Joint Research Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Internet and Communication Policy Center (ICPC) research team was hosted by the University of Padova for a Joint Research Retreat on March 13-14\, 2025\, centered around Digital Sovereignty in Comparative Perspective. For the team members\, it was a fantastic opportunity for stimulating exchange and collaboration. \nOver two days\, the team delved into key topics like AI governance\, geopolitical challenges\, Indigenous Data Sovereignty\, and a comparative analysis of digital sovereignty strategies in the EU and India. The retreat allowed us to share ideas\, discuss preliminary findings\, and create a strong foundation for future research and publications. \nIt was a rewarding moment of reflection and learning\, setting the stage for exciting next steps in our journey.
