SUMMARY:Social Media Governance in Georgia and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, 02 November 2023\, Member of the ZeMKI’s Platform Governance\, Media\, and Technology Lab Dr. Dennis Redeker convenes a panel discussion entitled “Building Trust in the Digital Age: How to fight hate and misinformation on social media – in Georgia and beyond”. The public event will take place at 17:00-19:00h at Haus der Wissenschaft (1st floor) in Bremen. \nFour speakers will each provide a short lecture on different aspects of social media in Georgia and their governance\, looking into challenges as well as potential solutions. Prof Sergi Jorbenadze (Tbilisi State University) will discuss how to empower civil law in the age of social media\, Prof. Ushangi Bakhtadze (Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University) will talk about challenges presented by Internet crime and misinformation\, whereas Dr. Nina Shengelia (Tbilisi State University and Caucasus International University) will propose avenue of future social media governance in Georgia\, taking as an example the Aotearoa New Zealand Code of Practice Online Safety and Harms. Dennis will add an outsider’s informed perspective by providing an insight into the data of the Platform Governance Survey\, which was conducted at ZeMKI and which includes respondents from Georgia. Apart from taking stock of current challenges and discourses on social media governance in Georgia\, the panel will also debate possible ways ahead. The three Georgian guest speakers propose the creation of a Social Media Council in Georgia to enhance the protection of rights of Georgian users on social media platforms. \nThe conversation will be moderated by ZeMKI member Vasilisa Kuznetsova (also member of the Platform Governance\, Media\, and Technology Lab). The event is co-hosted by the Lab Platform Governance\, Media and Technology (PGMT) at the Centre for Media\, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI)\, University of Bremen.
